<image:caption>I'm driven by the philosophy and Asante Adinkra symbol, Sankofa, which means "Go back and get it" in the Twi language from the Akan people of Ghana. For the past four years, I’ve been doing extensive genealogical and historical investigations into my family and hometown of Sumter, South Carolina focusing on the African American community through which I’m currently: - Tracing descendants to their enslaved African ancestors - Researching plantations, slave owners, and enslaved populations, runaway African communities, resistance to slavery, repressive slave laws, founding and early members of historic Black churches, Rosenwald schools, and school desegregation. - Conducting oral interviews with elders who lived under the systems of sharecropping and tenant farming My research also includes the 18th century settler community, 19th century aristocratic plantation class, the plantation economy, historic religious institutions and their role in slave society, the West African and Haitian derived architecture style in residential homes and their connection to slave quarters and tenant housing, indigenous native populations, Reconstruction, and post-Reconstruction Black codes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’m a scholar of West African history, the transAtlantic slave trade, African American history, and the histories of comparative slavery, emancipation, and abolition in the Atlantic World. My specialization is the compensated abolition of the slave trade in the nineteenth century, with an emphasis on the histories of the British Empire and the connections between the United States, the Sierra Leone colony, and West Africa.</image:caption>

<image:title>Research - “Whose Loss?”: Reparations, Indemnities, and Sovereignty During the Era of Slave Trade</image:title>
<image:caption>My dissertation provides a comparative analysis of the disparities in indemnities – monetary compensation, territorial concessions and land redistribution, recognition of sovereignty, and legal protection – that were distributed by Britain to European powers, American nations, and West African sovereigns for slave trade abolition compliance, sanctioned through bilateral slave traffic suppression treaties, and based on the identity of contracting partners from 1807, when Britain abolished the slave trade, to the ratification of the final Anglo-West African anti-slave trade treaties in1863.</image:caption>
